With 24 February 2025 marking the third year since the Russia-Ukraine war began, and it about to enter the start of a fourth year, below is a comment from Dr Mark Ellis, Executive Director of the International Bar Association (IBA), on the crime of aggression committed by Russia in its invasion of Ukraine.
‘As we mark three years since Russia launched its full-scale war against Ukraine, and 11 years since its initial invasion, we are witnessing not only the bloodiest conflict in Europe since World War II but the most flagrant violation of international law - the use of force against the territorial integrity or political independence of another state. This is a crime of aggression. Vladimir Putin committed it. It’s that straightforward.’
