Starting from January 2025, attorney-at-law, Markiyan Malskyy, returned to Arzinger as Partner, Head of the West Ukrainian Branch, and Co-Head of the International Dispute Resolution and Arbitration Practice.
Markiyan Malskyy first joined Arzinger back in 2008. In 2022, he became Partner at Polish law firm Kochański & Partners, which employs over 100 lawyers in Warsaw and Krakow. There, he led the Kochański & Partners firm's Ukrainian Desk and became an accredited foreign attorney-at-law in Poland. Additionally, Markiyan held a position as a professor at the University of Warsaw, teaching private law and international commercial arbitration in Polish and English languages. He also acted as a board member of the Center for European Studies of Warsaw University, included in the list of arbitrators of the Arbitration Court at the Polish Chamber of Commerce, and Chair of the Legal Committee of Polish-Ukrainian Chamber of Commerce.
Since 2016, Markiyan has served as the Honorary Consul of Austria in Lviv. He holds LL.D degree (since 2020) and is former Head of the Lviv Regional State Administration. He holds leadership roles, including being Chair of the Bar Association in Lviv Region, a longstanding board member of Ukrainian Arbitration Association, Western Ukrainian branch of European Business Association, and arbitrator at ICAC at the Ukrainian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, as well as more than 10 international arbitration institutions.
Markiyan specialises in providing legal support for investment projects and dispute resolution, including international commercial and investment arbitration. His high expertise and achievements have been consistently recognised by leading international legal rankings, such as Chambers Global, Chambers Europe, Best Lawyers, and The Legal 500, etc.
«I am excited, enthusiastic and full of inspiration to join the team of exceptional professionals, whom I know so well. I firmly believe that Ukraine, as it defends its right to exist and grow, needs experienced lawyers to safeguard its interests, support its economy, increase investment, and support the rule of law. Leading Arzinger's West Ukrainian branch — recognised by law firm rankings for over a decade as the region's No.1 law firm — I will focus on protecting the interests of domestic and international companies, fostering their development, and ensuring their successful operations during these challenging times. Naturally, international disputes and arbitration will be a prominent part of my practice.
The Western region, despite the war, offers relative safety, attracting new projects that require professional day-to-day legal support. Arzinger continues to lead the legal services market here, maintaining its position as the sole branch of a major Ukrainian law firm in the region.
I also plan to integrate the European experience I have gained into Ukraine's legal practice. Over recent years, I have successfully implemented numerous projects for Ukrainian businesses in Poland and across the EU, being an important business provider of legal services for major Ukrainian enterprises in Europe. This exposure has equipped me with valuable insights into different markets, expanded my professional network, and provided a deeper understanding of global business trends.
Ukraine’s investment appeal continues to grow despite the ongoing war, and I am confident that our team will help clients seize these opportunities. Unfortunately, the unprovoked full-scale invasion persists, and the demand for recovering damages from the aggressor is increasing. Alongside other projects, I will help clients restore justice and recover their losses — a process I have been actively engaged in since the war began,» — Markiyan Malskyy, partner at Arzinger, said.
«We are thrilled to start 2025 with the significant news of Markiyan Malskyy's return to Arzinger as Partner.
Within our firm, we often joke that the saying "you can't step into the same river twice" doesn't refer to us, as we have many stories that prove otherwise. I believe Markiyan’s extensive experience will further strengthen our team and expertise in international arbitration, litigation, real estate, corporate law, infrastructure and reconstruction projects. The return of such a mastodon as Markiyan will revitalise the West Ukrainian office and bolster our presence in a region where we have historically been market leaders.
Markiyan brings tremendous energy for new achievements, and we wholeheartedly wish him and his teams continued success,» — Timur Bondaryev, founding & managing partner, attorney-at-law, commented.
