Court Orders Russia to Pay USD 10.3 Million Ukrainian Rolled Steel Market Leader in Compensation for Damages

Ilyashev & Partners

The Commercial Court of Kyiv City ordered to recover from the Russian Federation over USD 10.3 million of damages caused to the Ukrainian enterprise as a result of Russian armed aggression and the occupation of Ukrainian territories. The relevant court judgment was issued on 22 July 2024.

Due to the armed aggression of the Russian Federation, one of the largest leading companies in the rolled steel market in Ukraine, lost control over the assets located in the temporarily occupied territories by the Russian Federation, in particular in the Donetsk, Luhansk, Zaporizhzhia, Kharkiv and Kherson regions, and that were actually misappropriated by the Russian occupation authorities. The company was deprived of access to its assets and continues to incur losses due to their loss, the inability to use them and carry out economic activities in the occupied territories.

Ukraine's law enforcement agencies began appropriate criminal proceedings on the misappropriation of goods and assets at production and retail facilities located in occupied territories.

Taking action to protect the client's interests, Ilyashev & Partners' team filed a lawsuit in the Commercial Court of Kyiv City seeking compensation from the Russian Federation for the damages caused to the company as a result of military aggression.

In court, Ilyashev & Partners proved that the Russian occupation forces are blocking the company's assets and misappropriating its property. The Commercial Court of Kyiv City accepted the well-founded legal position of Ilyashev & Partners’ team and satisfied the claim initiated by the Ukrainian company, ordering Russia to recover over USD 10.3 million in damages.

The case was handled by Counsels Marina Riashchenko and Oleksandr Denysenko.
